birthday celebrations for sis and I have already begun
and this market visit was just part
of the plans

get a little flustered in the gut when i eat this favorite fall meal treat
all the more reason to laugh at the gila monster
he speaks my brussel sprout truth
ouch!
i willingly endure pain for the privilege of eating these mothers

a rose by any other name, except when grown in a cabbage patch
but still beautiful in a bouquet
and quietly residing in my bedroom now

i wandered off and left for awhile
i don't like showing up without direction

and a sense of reprieve

this is my and my sister's birth month
don't hold our sultry and deep Scorpio side against us
we're just loyal to a fault
and acerbic in tongue when on the wrong side of the bed
or issue
sensuous and sometimes serious
but way fun

the scarf slash stole is handknit by big sis me, for my little sis for her day of birth
sweet remembrances
and the bench
is where i have been mentally these days
reconsidering life

grrrrrr i can't get to everything

bear with me as i try to keep it clean here

the worms crawl in
the worms crawl out
if you want a cute cupcake
you are in the wrong crowd

some visitors fly in the face of squirmy, wormy fare
Flat Moogie, visiting from moogieland
is completely aware
and still has not a care
as long as she gets chocolate on demand
and all rights to the licking spoon

this is where the ucky, yucky baked cakes met their final resting place
the festivities were on and the crowd was smacking their lips
many of the cup sized morsels would be but a brief but sinfully sweet memory

wanna make some of these graveyard delights?

First -
use a cake mix, follow the directions for cupcakes, but put some LUV into it girls, add chocolate milk instead of water, or buttermilk and when it comes to the oil - maybe use that stuff we call butter

Then -
take an 8oz of cream cheese (okay, this could be lowfat), room temperature, and half a bag of semisweet chocolate chips that you have melted carefully on a double boiler on the stove. whip together, add a teaspoon of vanilla for good measure, and approx. 3 cups of powdered sugar. frost right away.

Decorate -
with crumbled oreo cookies (about 7, without the creamy middles), and some gummi sour worms. makes it look like death warmed over at the cemetery.

Flat Moogie will be visiting madlycreative for a few days - so stay tuned to her crazy antics. she is from the south - who knows what that might end up being...

hibernation with a pair of knitting needles
and a slew of good movies
stir in a good book or two
chased down with a cup of hot tea
heaven on earth

can take a girl right away from the blog she loves best

pumpkins and little knits

i have been away in my little hidey hole
most of the time, sleeping and mending
then
in front of the cable tv at me mum's
knitting like a mad woman, living on tea and movies
felt like college vacations all over again
minus the boy angst and bad hair choices

incredibly, this pumpkin patch is just in my little corner of life
gourds inscribed with the names of sweet children who live
a mere stone's throw away from this,
the neighborhood pumpkin patch

i am a handcrafter of gifts from way back
winter solstice and christmas
the theme of giving is so resonant with my heart
this little gansey inspired sweater with hat
will be squirreled away until December
for my wee niece of two years

i lived in San Francisco for a decade
and would gladly travel miles to see
the Great Pumpkin rise from the pumpkin patch
now i get to see the round, orange orbs daily
and smell the loamy earth beneath their vines
as they worm across the grounds
seeking sustenance

i am a little bit crazed with impatience
to create a gift for all the loved ones
in time for the holidays
so that i might not spend every night before christmas
laboring away like an elf on amphetamines

on the one hand
life is gloriously rich
full of treasures from my friend's "p" patch
the generous cooking we share with one another
my wealth of local camaraderie
and the art materials i still find in my closet

on the other
my fight for employment of the general persusasion
continues on like a droning voice of frustration
as i cobble together my pennies to make dollars
and my dollars to make sense of things

today, i bask in blue skies, crisp turned up collars
the return of knitwear to the dressing schematic
and the energy to walk a couple of miles
a fresh pot of soup on the range
and a renewed vigor in my step

it's a plum job, and i don't mind saying so
plum, and ripe for the picking

my goodness, but don't you look plum rich
done with great aplum
plums and berries, nature's treasures

pounds and pounds of plumbs
i am slow roasting them in a 200 degree oven, cut in half, a quick breeze of butter on their backs for 4 hours in the oven
i am making orangette's plum crumble with hints of ginger (photo above - and serving it to me friends)
i am freezing them for days when i am plumless and pitiful
i am hoarding recipes, like this one at a new blog find, imby & itchy
still harvesting my lovely, free fruits and vegetable finds
for days when the sky is a little bleak
the harvest all gone
and i want a ray of summer fruit shine to light the day

the sun is still bringing it's late summer smiles leaving more fruit, more verdant greens to water, to harvest, to pick like a squirrel, i gather for the winter and dream the dream of kitchen witches and common oven chiefs

life should be so simple, full of song the gather, graze and wander in this moment, i can live from the land and me likes

gardens are overflowing and there is no way of knowing when the land will embrace Fall with open arms and harden the earth with chill glances

so while the buds do bloom and the flowers continue to smell fine i grope in the vines pluck at the buds fill the freezer and smile like a cheshire cat with a mouthful of garden gorgeousness

Message to the Blogosphere: so you wonder why i am such a foodie blog follower as well as the made creator at this blog? i am slow roasting tomatoes in the oven daily (can't find the source right now, but 200 degrees with olive oil on top for 7-8 hours is GOOD!), making whole grain banana crunch cake from mags at the other side of fifty, plum cake from girlichef, tomato and corn pie from smitten kitchen, cookies and roasting some italian plums to boot yep foodie lover down to my little apple core and lovin' every minute of it

sew, you know what i am doing today?
all of that sewing that keeps piling up around the machine
until it cascades to the floor and i stumble, fall, curse, and scream
then i pick the mound up and vow to get to work
today is that day

ever since my first trip through europe and happily, through finland
i stop for the designs and colorways of marimekko
i found this large cotton shirt at the thrift store for a dollar
today, before even getting dressed to for the almost autumnal weather outdoors
(1o days ago in the high 90's!!)
i took up the shoulder seams and a little tapering at the sides

can't stop making these creatures
they sprung from a knit "tart and cookie" pattern
but somehow they became alive
knit monsters from outeryarnspace

this maybe the face of the pinkypurl alien
or it may just be a cry from me for help
lift the curse of insane stitching up of otherworldly fluff and squish

buy a wooden frame at someplace like Ikea, where they have them in packs of four, or a thriftstore (don't spend much)
get some white paint and a paintbrush and then cover the frame with the paint (duh)

knit a piece of icord that is approximately the length of the outside edge of the frame
this will give you a little extra to play with
secure the loose ends
(get playful - i used 2 colors in rotation in mine)

get out the glue gun (good, i love saying that! shiver me timbers!)
carefully apply a little glue at a time down the center of the frame
then press the icord down firmly to hold it in place
round out the corners
maybe do a practice run without the glue first

isn't that easier than you thought?
don't you just love glue guns??

i left the left lower handside where i began gluing open at the very bottom
so that when i came back around from the right handside i could
kinda loop them over one another
i printed off a photo of one of my knit cupcakes with a little phrase
"put your photo here"
in the center
so people would get the right idea
and not think they had to live with a photo of some fiber dessert in their living rooms
just because i would

When visiting elsewhere, the charm of a place sinks in and makes you giddy helpless not to smile. This turquoise wonder of a laundromat is now sporting air conditioning, the new sign hung outside states invitingly - wooow, big city here we come.

The on-site proprietor just continued to watch some kind of race on telly, and let me oooohh and aahhhh over the lovely color that permeated everything within - turquoise. My luv color of all vintage finds.

These chairs, once at home in a local theater and now outside seating at a little eatery are just posh - no other term for them. Just look at that detail on the sides. Heaven.

I am a shutter bug, no doubt about it. The call of the wild yet undiscovered world just waiting to be framed within my viewfinder. Oh blogosphere, you make this all so much more fun and plausible possible. Thank you.

A puppy love story

I run on intuition and instinct (which works really well except when dealing with "myself" where I can be totally at a loss). Two weeks ago to the day, I was in the family car ( aka my bike) after a weekly visit to the local library, when the nice weather and the hum of the wheels beneath my bum enticed me to keep riding further than need be on the bike trail.

As soon as I turned the curve on the trail and saw the wild antics of a frenzied chihuahua so obviously lost and out of sorts, I knew that I was on a mission sent from the Universe. I even said so aloud. Something like "Oh, I know why you had me ride down here today, ole Universe, you want me to help this little lost dog, don't ya?"

All well and good, but the little chichi was having none of me and my overladen bike basket that rattled and groaned under the weight of books and bag, plus my superalien looking bike helmet paired with my 70's frame sunglasses that together make me look like a bug in human clothing. I cajoled her, chased her, cried a little as she ran into a parking lot where a black crow her size swooped in to take a look. I gave up after several minutes of riding in circles and seeing nothing. I told the Universe I couldn't help if I couldn't find her, but upon turning the corner to head home, there she was, perched and looking out on the horizon. With the help of a man who saw my intentions, the little girl chihuahua was happily cornered and thrust into my arms.

I figured with my blossoming computer skills, digital camera and ability to quickly make and print signs, this was why I was chosen to help the little girl I came to know as "Peach". But after hanging signs, putting found ads on Craigslist, FidoFinder, Petfinder, mass email to the neighborhood association and the offleash dog park crowd, visit to the vet to check for a chip (none), walking the dog 4 times a day in the area she was found, talking to pet sitters, groomers and senior housing managers in the area - nothing was happening.

Oh, well something was happening, just not the kind you wanted to hear or know about. People trying to scam me by taking the photo I put up, cropping and Photoshopping it a bit to look slightly different and then putting up their own ad for a little doggie that had gone missing. Ugh.

There was also all of the people who contacted you with heart wrenching stories of loved furry ones lost to them that in no way resembled the dog I found, but owners who were looking for any shred of hope to be reunited with their loved ones. These were the people who applauded my fortitude to find the correct owners and gave me a positive sense of purpose when things got a bit annoying and sad.

Peach, named as such because she was and is, a "peach" of a dog - was the easiest part of the whole found dog equation. She was smart and funny and huggable. She liked to go on walks and be outside (within a day she had the whole leash thing figured out). Peach slept under a pile of comforter that she would shape into a nest on the top of my bed with me every night. I still wake up more gingerly these morning, a week later, trying not to wake the dog who liked to sleep in and take her time greeting the world in the morning. Ahhh - our temperaments were sooo well suited for one another. I miss her still.

A totally unexpected side effect of doing right by this little dog was my mother and her feeling of abandonment over the time that I spent those seven days that I had Peach in trying to take care of her and find her home. My mother and I share a dog - and I walk him everyday. Mom had to do a little more of the dog care than she was accustomed to that week, but she had to adjust to a bit more than that. My attention had shifted and divided, and that was just not acceptable. Being a widow of just 2 years now, Mom has me living just up the street and seeing her everyday. Mom has become a little territorial. At times very vocally so. It seems I am not allowed to have outside interests that conflict with the status quo. It was a learning experience on so many fronts. (Ha! who am I kidding - it still is)

Happily, the story ended well for everyone. I was sitting out on the lawn with the dog exactly a week plus 3 hours from the day Peach was found, and the owners drove by and saw us. The first out of the car was the down syndrome daughter who emphatically told me that I had her dog. A neighbor's daughter driving with the mother and daughter dog owners interpreted for the emotional reunion (they were Spanish speaking and new to the neighborhood). The family of two had never seen my signs, never looked on the Internet, had never thought that the dog would have wandered as far down into the neighborhood as she did. Mad computer skills - ha! Just good ole lost and found karma that reunited animal and girl.

Oh, I asked my litany of questions and received the correct responses, but it was clear from the wagging tale and the dog kisses being generously distributed that this was where Peach, whose real name is Toochi, belonged.

I visited Peach the next day - poster in hand. I wanted the owners to see some of the efforts I had put forth in the effort to send their dog back home to them, but I also was missing Peach. She whined and had me pick her up and it was obvious that we still were in love with each other. For just a moment, I think both Peach and I wondered what would life had been like if she had not ever been found. I was all ready to find her the very best home, but I know now that I could have provided her with a good one myself. I don't know if I should hasten back for a visit just yet. Emotions are still a bit raw. Toochi's family says that they hope to have a new litter of puppies with her "novio (boyfriend) " soon and have offered me one.

A little chip off the ole Peach block - I would seriously consider risking the wrath of Mom for that opportunity. But who is to say what will materialize in the future. I for one, am living in a miasma of the unknown right now.

But a friendly cuddle with a warm and furry being is always welcome.

I have a book that I retreat to when times are hard, I need a help line to be thrown, and maybe no one else is getting my dire drift. I randomly open it, read the meditation and mentally unwind.
A week of questioning - outsiders and those within, questioning my whys and wherefores, thrusting unwanted energy into my playing field, making the process of following my heart and soul an arduous task when it should be much simpler. Murky waters and not always knowing the next step, but being prepared to make a "feel" for it and hope for the best
.
The found dog was the easiest part of the reuniting equation this week, the rest being at times a little ugly (from loved ones ?!) and more. Dog equals pure love, that is truth. Humans need work.

Blogging - an act of passion and sharing with my community. My blog for my city - under scrutiny by the geek squad and a legal beagle with hearty questions. Why do I care? Speak too quickly for my own words, when in fact, they don't care one iota about my truth.

I need some more lead in my feet, a little thicker skin and a healthy dose or self respect slathered on daily.

Never knew what the hell a meme was til I starting this blogging thing. I got tagged/given an award/told to divulge deep and dark secrets. I am here to tell ya- I am keeping the deep and dark ones to myself!

1. I can never help myself when it comes to flowers and taking photos - Nope, absolutely NO self control on this front. Not trying to cut back or anything, either.

2. Totally the weirdo, stray that lost their way, what the hell is she doing now! one of the family. And now that I am "back", I'm outing myself even more. Uh oh.

3. Not afraid of color. Tend to go right up to the brightest and the boldest of them and "hang out". Collect orange wherever and whenever I can. So sue me if you can't find some now.

4. Find people that have a slightly off kilter or skewed perception of life to be highly fascinating. Want to cozy up to them and see if the zaniness is catching - hope to come down with a bad case and learn even more.

5. I have a bad case of "I know there is more out there that I am going to accomplish", it just doesn't involve cars, 401K's and a Mr. Jones. But I would settle for a cute cuddler with an artistic bent and a sense of passion. (He could have a car though, that would make life a little simpler, and that would be okay I guess).

6. I like to try to be funny. But in person, I can be boisterous sometimes, and other times, you'd have to sit real close to hear my jokes. I need to feel comfortable enough to let me channel the funnies. I can be a pistol - just not always within everyone's hearing range.

7. I don't have any tattoos. Not a one. I have thought about it for years. Know artists, have access to mad tat talent - can't decide. Then decide, but can't find all the right artwork. Sigh. Will I ever get a tattoo? Big question. No clear answer. Looking for divine intervention. Or really great tattoo kismet.

Let me catch my breathe - right my balance, find a word to squeak.

I have begun to enjoy this journey more than I can express - as I throw caution aside and the entire kitchen sink in
I want to leave nothing out - yet, how to let it all cohesively in?
The amalgamation of many disparate parts (forgive me if I repeat myself, that seems to be a duplicate piece that always wants center stage - again)
I am too many to hide away, to few good bits not to share at least a few times over
